1. mac OS Sierra IS HERE:

They seem to come along pretty often these operating system updates. The latest is available for free from the App Store in Applications on your Mac and has lots of cool features like being able to give voice commands via Siri to your computer. Say “Open Safari” and it does just that!
However, be warned: older computers will not run well with this update unless they have at least 8GB of RAM.
If you are unsure about whether to install Sierra give me a call.

2. iOS 10 IS HERE:

Another update for iDevices — iPhone and iPad — has arrived with many improvements. Free for any iPhone from 5 onwards, my favourite feature is a Magnification that is accessed by triple-clicking the Home button. Then you can zoom in on the very annoying tiny print that seems to be everywhere these days. Or is it just my eyes?
Get it by going to Settings/General/Software Update.

3. LOGITECH iPAD KEYBOARD:

A very cool backlit keyboard and stand for the iPad helps move it towards the laptop replacement that many people seek.

4. GOOGLE DUO IS A FACETIME RIVAL:
The constraints of Apple’s FaceTime is that it is limited to iPhones so doesn’t work on calls to Android phones. Enter Google Duo which does pretty much the same thing as FaceTime but to any phone. Free.

5. CONTROL PASSWORDS WITH DASHLANE:
Another password manager that aims to simplify the management of these annoying essentials, Dashlane is free or $40 per year for the premium version that syncs across your devices.

6. ZOOM IT IS FOR OLD EYES:
Time marches on and all that, eyes aren’t as sharp as before. Enter Zoom It a $5 app to enlarge anything on the Mac screen so you can see it in close up.

7. FUNKY WEATHER SITE, DARK SKY:
There are a lot of weather sites out there but Dark Sky is very cool. A nice feature is the small Time Machine button at the bottom of the window to look back at the weather as it was or forward to forecast it.

8. GRAB A FRAME FROM A VIDEO:
SnapMotion is a very straight forward app that just does one thing: extract images from video. You can do it singly or a whole heap at a time, batch-process them, create GIFs and more. $6 from the App Store.

9. AVAST IS A FREE VIRUS CHECKER:
No, there are still no viruses on the Mac platform. But it doesn’t hurt to be sure and safe and sometimes if an account has been hacked the bank or other financial institution will demand a virus scan.
Avast is a free virus checker that seems to be quite anonymous, that is I don’t notice it running! It also tells you if there is a dodgy email in your Inbox.
